The Eupen slaughter house, built in 1901 in the Prussian style by Walter Fresse, reflects an emphasis on systematising the organisation of work. This is seen, in particular, in the design of the building’s interior and the layout of the buildings to create the most efficient work environment possible.
As was the case for many of the industrial buildings of the period, the streamlined design was dressed up by the architecture.
The decorative nature of the artisanal stonework (bricklaying, coatings, half-timbering) and the use of period details (crenellations, wood awnings, Italian features) was intended to conceal the purpose of the site.
